چکیده

One of the important discoveries in reproduction is that the reproductive process uses for its own purpose lymphokines and cytokines which were initially defined as being of immunologic nature, first traced within the immune system. This is not very surprising, since most of these molecules are more signaling factors and communication molecules between cells of various lineages than molecules strictly restricted to the immune system, such as immunoglobulins (Ig) and T-cell receptors. The field has now evolved from the idea of a host-graft relationship to the concept of an integrated dialogue between the mother and the conceptus, more akin, for some, to a host-tumour relationship. Yet, in fact, the paradigm of acceptance and/or rejection of the foetus by its mother is still heavily embedded in the thinking of many reproductive immunologists. This is not surprising, since the trend of research that led to modern reproductive immunology was initiated by Sir Peter Medawar’s disquisition on "the riddle of the foetal allograft. ’’1 It is therefore not all disconcerting that, in 1997, one of Medawar’s colleagues, Leslie Brent, in his recent book A History of Transplantation Immunology, still depicts the materno-fetal relationship as "Nature’s (almost) perfect allograft, ’’z nor that pioneering work in the field is due to another collaborator of Leslie Brent and Peter Medawar, Rupert E. Billingham. However, the paradigms have evolved. As you will see in this brief presentation, there is still room for discussing, and re-envisaging, with the use of murine models and data in humans, the concept and mechanisms of "rejection" of the foetal allograft. But the question of the tolerance of the conceptus has evolved. First, we have known for a long time that we can and must dissociate local and systemic events, but this idea has not yet fully penetrated the thinking of the general public. It is possible to observe rejection of paternal strain tissues after preimmunisation of the mother without compromising pregnancy (in fact, the babies born in such situations are in most circum-

Maternal hematological and virological characteristics during early feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection of cats as predictors of fetal infection and reproductive outcome at early gestation.

The FIV-infected cat is a small animal model for HIV mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) because the two lentiviruses are biologically related and produce similar clinical syndromes. Both viruses are vertically transmissible and may negatively impact reproductive outcome. Maternal hematological and virological parameters are predictors of MTCT in HIV-infected women. Our purpose was to determine...

Herpes gestationis. Immunopathology and characterization of the HG factor.

Five patients with herpes gestationis, a blistering disease of pregnancy, were studied immunologically. All had in vivo deposition of C3 in a linear band along the basement membrane zone of lesional and normal-appearing skin, the location of early blister formation. Immunoglobulin deposition was more variable, though four patients had evidence of in vivo bound IgG at the same site. A circulatin...

I-33: Early Assessment of Pregnancy Viability

Early determination of pregnancy viability is essential for women at risk for experiencing ectopic pregnancy or spontaneous abortion. Several markers of pregnancy viability have been identified including serial human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) monitoring and sonography, in addition to several less commonly available biochemical markers. An ideal test would be readily available, inexpensive an...

Studies on Biochemical Properties of Cervico-Vaginal Mucus during Early Pregnancy in Buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

The present work was carried out to study the variation in biochemical properties of cervico-vaginal mucus of pregnant and non pregnant animals which could help to design suitable tool in future for early pregnancy diagnosis in buffaloes. Cervico-vaginal mucus samples were obtained from 30 buffaloes (12 pregnant and 18 non pregnant) and some biochemical parameters were compared. Means of pH, so...

Ectopic Pregnancy in Cesarean Section Scar

Pregnancy implantation within the scar of a previous cesarean delivery is one of the rarest locations for an ectopic pregnancy. Early diagnosis of this condition with the use of ultrasound imaging allows for preserving the uterus and subsequent fertility. However, a delay in either diagnosis or treatment can lead to uterine rupture, hysterectomy and significant maternal morbidity. With increasi...

Early Inflammation , Immunopathology and Aging 1 2

1 7 1 8 Age-related diseases are often attributed to immunopathology, which results in self-1 9 damage caused by an inappropriate inflammatory response. Immunopathology 2 0 associated with early-life inflammation also appears to cause faster ageing, although 2 1 we lack direct experimental evidence for this association. To understand the 2 2 interactions between ageing, inflammation and immunop...
